Stanozolol (STZ) is an active nutritional anabolic-androgenic steroid used as energetic medicine. However, its abuse may result in several adverse effects including reproductive toxicity. Royal jelly (RJ) is an efficient antioxidant that has been used to treat reproductive problems. In this study, we investigated the possible protective effects of RJ on STZ-induced sperm impairment and embryotoxicity in mouse model. In this experimental study, 20 adult male mice were divided into four groups of five animals each. Two groups of mice were administered STZ (4.6 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 35 days. One of these groups received RJ (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) concurrently. A vehicle-treated control group and a RJ control group were also included. STZ treatment caused a significant decrease in sperm count and motility with an increase in DNA damage of the sperm cells. Significant decrease in fertilization rate and poor blastocyst formation were also observed in STZ-treated mice. The above-noted parameters were restored to near normal level by RJ co-administration. The results demonstrate that RJ protects against STZ-induced reproductive toxicities.
